The 2008 Farnborough Airshow took place last week, and while surviving the strong cold winds all day wearing only a t-shirt, and managing to get out of the carpark after 2 hours of queueing, I managed to get back home and sort through my photos… here are a few which I’ve picked out; if you want to see more - check out my photography section.

Yesterday I travelled into Central London to go and visit the Motorexpo 2008, the world’s largest (according to their website!) free-to-visit car show at Canary Wharf, giving people the chance to see the latest vehicles from some of the world’s leading motor manufacturers such as Jaguar, BMW, Porsche, Aston Martin and more…!

I took the liberty of taking a few snaps of the event which you can see in my photography section, or see a sample of a few below;

NPL Nano ShowToday was the first Nano Show; a bi-monthly series of science lectures presented simultaneously in real life at NPL and in Second Life. A real life presenter, in front of a real life audience in the NPL auditorium discusses Nanotechnology related topics, while an audience in Second Life, listens and watches the presentations in real time, and all having a chance to participate in voting and questions at the end.

All in all it went successfully, and hidden amongst a tower of cables and computers I came out ok! The set-up was - and is - quite hectic! The speaker, and thier Second Life avatar use and are logged in to the main Auditorium computer on the main screen. Then there’s a moderator taking questions from Second Life attendees and managing the presentation slides on his own computer.

Then there’s me… managing the audio, from three microphones - one for the speaker, one for the moderator, and one for the real life audience when they ask questions, all feeding into Second Life as and when required. I’ve also got 2 laptops, one showing the second life audience for the real life audience to see on a TV, and a second using Wirecast, to record everything as it happens from the computers, and two video cameras.

Here are some photos taken before, and during the event of the real life speaker and audience!

Today I went into London to see this year’s Gumball 3000 Rally, this time again starting in London, then off too Asia and back again. The cars were all lined up along Pall Mall for most of the day while a whole heap of people were spectating.

So, for a good few hours we wondered around taking photos of the cars in thier starting line up battling people through the crowds to get decent shots, seeing all the drivers and models along with press and crew doing thier stuff!

The race was due to begin at 4pm, so just before we made our way to a part of the course with a whole bunch of other people to get some shots of them all heading off! To my complete surprise, Jay Kay from the group Jamiroquai waved and pointed at me, from his car! I failed to get a photo out of sheer amazement, however Myles ‘kinda’ did, which I have stolen from him and are below (I was just to the right of Myles!)…

I took a whole bunch of photos which have been uploaded to the gallery which you can see by clicking here.

Thursday night I was treated with being able to watch the musical Cats on tour at the Princess Theatre in Torquay. Now if anyone is due to see it, and doesn’t know the story, well, I’ll be mentioning some of the plot and spoilers below so - you have be warned.

It was a pretty good show, lasting around three hours (including interval break), with a whole bunch of people dancing and running around dressed as cats! The show mainly goes along introducing various cat’s and thier personalities. From posh snobby cats to lively cats, they’re all pretty much shown! The main story though is of an old, somewhat frail moggy cat who recollects on her life, and what once was, while she continuingly tries to become accepted into the big gang of cats who exclude her, even though she continues to have hope that tomorrow will bring a new day, and another chance. The musical ends on somewhat of a sad tone, when finally she gets accepted into the group, but alas, it’s too little too late and she dies chasing her final dream to be accepted.

It was interesting to compare the different cat personalities with real person personalities, such as that old cat really is that strange weird old woman who know one talks too roaming the streets, and the lively and snobby cats are just like people too. Makes you think which personality you and you’re friends are!

The cats also use the walkways around the audience to run up and down and ‘interact’ with the audience; I was one of these said audience members, with one of the cats grooming me and rubbing up and down me, which was embarrassing! Overall it was a good night,and a good show, it’s been a while since I had been to a performance and it was a nice change from the norm!
